The official policy states no pets, amongst other no-nos, however, many have found that it’s quite often, especially around sunrise, that they are dog-free. The cove at the western end of the beach has a very nice playground for children, plus a nice sheltered pavilion. From here, the path to the lighthouse starts, and from here, you can take a leisurely stroll watching Bald Cypress trees and wildlife. If you want a taste of older-school Santa Cruz surfing, the best day to go is Thursday, when the tide is low and the surf is big. At about sunset, pelicans come ashore for a drink at the cove’s soft sand. For those who like to watch birds, pelicans are very common near the beach on spring and fall nights, and as they come ashore, they allow birdwatcher’s a great opportunity to watch them land and make their way back into the sea.

As you can see, there are many reasons to head to Panther beach, though the most important reason is its natural beauty. To the north, you can find Mount Ocky, with its wild and scenic trails that wind around the steep north end of the beach. Hikers also adore the terrain of the beach, which is long, with lots of hills and gentle slopes to keep those tired legs working. And, to the north, the view of Capistrano Lighthouse will let you know just how much the place has changed over the years.
