Does It Snow in Australia? Fun Ways To Experience Austrailas Snow

Does it snow in Australia? That’s the first question I asked myself when trying to find a quiet, snow-covered place for a family getaway. First, let’s start by explaining that this article will not limit itself to describing how snowy these are. Instead, I will try to describe all of them in detail. They are beautiful places full of magical snowfall.

You probably know where you can spend your next holiday, Australia may be known for its heatwaves, but there are still six places where you can enjoy some snowy fun this Australian winter – check them out below!

Does It Snow in Australia?

Yes, it does, but usually just for a few months, and you can find the complete list of those places here.

It is not as cold as one would think, though it can be pretty windy, especially in Tasmania, where we stayed (an island off the south coast).

Wind can make things even colder than usual and blow away all the snow within seconds – like I said: magical.

When Does it Snow in Australia?

It mainly snows in June, July, and August – but not necessarily on the same day. But if you’re planning a winter trip to Australia, then chances are you’ll be able to catch some magic white weather! Most of the snowy area is around the mountains, and even though it was still pretty warm (for winter) during our stay, we got to see some beautiful snow.

Where Does It Snow In Australia?

1. Mount Hotham

Mount Hotham is a ski resort and snowboarding destination located in the Alpine region of Victoria, Australia. It has 26 lifts servicing 37 runs and ten terrain parks with easy access to some excellent backcountry for those who like their powder untracked!

2. Mount Baw Baw

Mount Baw Baw is a ski resort and snowboarding destination located in the Victorian Alps of Australia. It has 20 runs and nine terrain parks. The one thing I noticed about this place was that many places even had igloos, which looked very cozy!

3. Falls Creek

Falls Creek is a ski resort and snowboarding destination located in Victoria, Australia. It has 50 terrain parks for all levels, including boarders learning to jump their first jumps & plenty of space for experts to show off their latest tricks!

4. Mount Buller

Mount Buller is a sizeable alpine area used mainly for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. It is one of Australia’s premier resorts because it has the most extensive ski slopes and snow sports facilities.

5. Thredbo

Thredbo is one of Australia’s premier resorts boasting 96 runs, seven terrain parks, a SuperPipe, and a Super T-bar for those who like to hit the powder hard!

6. Perisher Perisher resort

It is a four-season resort situated in the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia, with an area of over 54 square kilometers making it Australia’s largest ski resort by far!

7. Charlotte Pass

Charlotte Pass offers a variety of year-round activities and is the closest snow resort to Sydney. It is located in New South Wales, Australia, and has 35 runs – so not too bad! They also have four terrain parks & 12 lifts, including two high-speed six-seaters, for your convenience.

Fun Ways To Enjoy The Snow:

SCOOT AROUND THE MOUNTAINS ON A SNOWMOBILE:

You can find snowmobiles for hire in the Jindabyne region of NSW and the Mount Hotham area.

The snowmobile is an easy way to see some of Australia’s famous mountains; we saw our first kangaroos on a snowy road and drove through dense forest with no other cars around.

ICE SKATING:

As you might have expected, ice skating is quite popular in the colder regions and something that was on my “to do” list before we left Australia. It takes place at The Melbourne Ice Skating Centre in the city center. There’s also a fair few options for those who want to play ice hockey.

SNOW-SHOEING IN BRIGHT:

If you’re up for an active and fun way to enjoy the magical snowy landscape, then why not try snowshoeing at Bright in Victoria.

The trails around town are well marked and reasonably easy to follow; we even brought our two kids along with us, and they had a great time exploring nature together as a family.

SKI AND SNOWBOARD ON THE SLOPES:

This was one of my favorite activities – skiing or boarding down the slopes is such an exhilarating feeling! Mount Buller, Spencers Creek, and Mount Hotham offer ski lifts for those who want to enjoy this snowy adventure.

CAMPING IN THE SNOW:

If you want even more fresh air, then camping under the stars of a quiet snowy night might be for you. There are some campsites around Bright but don’t expect any luxuries, so bring along everything you need including firewood.

SPOT SNOW-DUSTED WILDLIFE :

This is just one of those pictures that were surprisingly difficult to take – it was still pretty warm, so the snow melted fast and I felt bad for disturbing these guys by taking their picture. But still, enjoy them!

RELAX AND TAKE IN THE TRANQUILITY OF NATURE:

This is what my wife liked best about our trip to Australia’s snowy mountains – she didn’t want to do anything active or go on any tours but rather spent hours walking around without seeing another person. Taking photos became much more difficult after the sun went down, even with a moon that was dancing between clouds all night long.

Iceland Ski Resort

Iceland Ski Resort is situated close to Mount Buller, Victoria’s premier alpine playground. With over 40 kilometers of gentle slopes, this makes it an ideal resort for beginners and families with children or groups looking to discover their love for winter sports. If you’re planning a trip we hope we’ve made your researching easier – let us know if we missed anything and where would be your Australia’s number-one snow resort?
