Mexico City can be visited all year long, though November through February is the most popular months.

Temperature and Rain:  

The climate in Mexico City is subtropical, with distinct dry and rainy seasons. The warmest months of the year are from May to September, where high temperatures can reach 36°C (98°F) for an average high.

In winter, it’s common to see high of 21°C (70°F), low of 8°C (46°F), and even lower in some areas of the city. The rainiest months are June and September.

The best month to visit Mexico City:

It’s a good idea to avoid the center of Mexico City from late November through February due to smog, peak crowds during the holiday season, and rainy weather.

Mexico City is crowded on weekends year-round, but holidays are especially busy with people traveling into the city from other states in Mexico.

Holidays: January 1 (New Year’s Day), March 19 – 21 (weekend before Easter Sunday), May 1 (Labor Day), September 16 (revolution day), and December 25 (Christmas).

High tourist season:

Mexico City is a popular destination year-round with a high tourist season from November through February (peak holiday season and Christmas).

Mid-week tours are busy with people from Mexico City visiting from Monday through Thursday.

It’s best to avoid heavy travel times by booking mid-week tours and staying in hotels outside the city center to avoid smog, peak crowds, and rainy weather.

 Low tourist season:

There is a low tourist season during the summer months (June through August) because Mexico City has a subtropical climate with high temperatures averaging 36°C (98°F).

December 21 – January 1. Holiday in Latin America is three days long, and people tend to travel into the city for Christmas, Carnival, and Independence day.

You’ll see fewer crowds on mid-week tours, with people leaving on Friday through Sunday or taking vacations over the weekend.

Water temperature: 70-80°F (21-27°C).

Mexico has many beaches for swimming, including Puerto Morelos on the Caribbean coast located just south of Cancun, but remember that all beaches have rip currents except those protected by lifeguards.  

 Visit Mexico City in the summer:

Summer is a good time to visit Mexico City if you don’t mind 100°F (38C) temperature and high humidity.

Rain tends to come in short downpours with a quick clearing of the skies so you can enjoy outdoor activities, including sightseeing, visiting museums, taking tours, and going out at night without worrying too much about getting caught in the rain.

Days are cloudy or partly cloudy with heavy afternoon thunderstorms nearly every day, causing water temperatures to drop into the lower 70s°F (21C).  It’s not uncommon for storms to last all day until 3 or 4 pm.

Thunderstorms often make roads slippery with rain creating hazardous driving conditions, so drive carefully during late afternoon hours when storms occur.

Nighttime lows are usually in the mid to upper 60s°F (19-20C).

Mexico City’s high season runs from May through October.

The best times to visit Mexico City are during fall and winter, when days are cooler and dry.  Visit during spring or summer if you don’t mind 100°F (38C) temperature along with higher humidity levels.

 Visit Mexico City in spring:

Spring is an excellent time to visit Mexico City when the city starts to dry out from the long rainy season.  

Temperatures are mild, averaging in the mid 70s°F (25-26C) and low 50s°F (10C) at night.  March through May is known as primavera or spring throughout Latin America.

It’s usually sunny, with a few afternoon clouds, giving way to clearer skies in the evening and overnight.

This is also the best time of year to see many Mexican wildflowers, including cacti, agave plants, bougainvillea, and roses in full bloom throughout Mexico City,. Many parks offer flowers such as Plaza de las Tres Culturas and the Japanese Gardens in Chapultepec Park.

 Weather in Mexico City:

The climate in Mexico City is classified as a subtropical highland with an average rainfall of 940 mm (37 in) per year.  It’s situated at 1930 meters (6,400 ft) above sea level.  Mexico city weather varies from cool to cold during the fall and winter months, December through February, and hot, humid summer months May through October.

Throughout most of the year, just about every day has rain that falls during a thunderstorm due to unstable air masses in the upper atmosphere.  Lightning can be seen between late afternoon and evening hours from spring into early autumn, averaging three thunderstorms each afternoon.  

Annual rainfall varies greatly depending on you’re near mountain slopes or valley bottom.  Mexico City’s rainy season starts in May, with June having the heaviest rainfall of the year and extending into mid-September, while October tends to be the driest month.

Temperatures vary little throughout the year averaging in the upper 70s°F (25-26C) and low 50s°F (10C) at night.

It’s usually sunny, with a few afternoon clouds, giving way to clearer skies in the evening and overnight.

This is also one of Mexico’s coolest times of the year. You can find blizzards from December through March up in near Denver, Colorado, from moist air masses coming over mountains along Mexico’s eastern coast that cool down as they descend, dropping snow on higher elevations.

Mexico City gets its highest rainfall during hurricane season from August through October, when hurricanes usually become more active due to warmer sea surface temperatures. Hence, it’s best to avoid Mexico during this time.

It’s not unusual for cities further northwest of Mexico City such as Guadalajara and Monterrey to receive twice the amount of rain that falls on Mexico City, averaging around 3,000 mm (120 in) per year but only have a fraction of the humidity ranging from 40%-50%.  

These cities are located between 1800-2300 meters (6000-7500 ft) above sea level, where the weather is cooler year-round with much less humidity than found at or below 2000 meters (6600 ft).

Mexico City offers loads of things to do from day excursions outside the city and nearby ruins such as Teotihuacan, where pyramids line up leading up to a Basilica built over a cave where on December 12, 1531, an event happened that brought about Christianity when an apparition of Virgin Mary was seen by Aztec Indian named Juan Diego and told him she wanted a church built there which he reported Bishop Juan de Zumarraga.

The Basilica is built over the spot where Virgin Mary was seen linking Christianity with Mexico’s indigenous heritage.

There are also dozens of theaters throughout Mexico City showing everything from avant-garde theater pieces to classical music concerts or plays and dance performances rooted in pre-Colombian Aztec heritage.
