ABOUT ZANCUDO, COSTA RICA

Zancudo is a small fishing village located in Los Suenos, Osa Peninsula. It’s less than an hour away from the airport and you can get there by taking a bus (45 minutes) or hiring a taxi (25 minutes). Since Zancudo is far from the other major cities such as Jaco or Quepos, it serves as a perfect secluded hideaway for those who like to find peace and quiet when on vacation.

HOW TO GET TO ZANCUDO

If you are staying in Los Suenos or Puerto Jimenez, the easiest way to get to Zancudo is by bus. The most frequent schedule is from Avispa Country Inn at 8:50 AM and 1 PM (Puerto Jimenez) and 10 AM (Los Suenos). Several other companies offer travel options as well; you can check out schedules through these two websites:

The ride takes about 45 minutes. You’ll be dropped off on the side of the road where there’s a little store called “El Delfin” that displays buses to Dominical/Uvita/San Isidro. Ask them for a bus to Pueblo Nuevo; they will inform you of the schedule.

The bus ride to Culture Shock Hostel in Zancudo is 20,000 colones ($40). There are no direct buses to the hostel, so you’ll have to take a taxi from Pueblo Nuevo for about $3-5 one-way depending on how long the drive takes and traffic conditions.

OR HIRE A TAXI

If you’re staying with friends or family near Costa Rica Fortuna (Los Angeles), there’s a good chance that they will be able to pick you up after your flight lands and transport you either to Zancudo or their home and back again. Otherwise, hiring a taxi is another option for getting from Liberia International Airport to Zancudo. Prices are subject to change but should be between $100-$150 (11 hours) one-way.***

The best Time To Visit Zancudo

The best time to visit Playa Zancudo is during the dry season which is between December and May. However, if you want to stay longer then by all means go ahead but remember that it does rain some days into the month of January although the weather starts getting more consistent starting in February.

Keep in mind that Costa Rica has two seasons; rainy season and dry season. While prices are higher around Christmas, Easter Week, and even on Halloween, Playa Zancudo is always busy with tourists who mostly come from North America or Europe thanks to its proximity to other popular tourist destinations like San Jose (2 hrs 30 mins away) as well as Puerto Jimenez (1 hour 30 minutes away).

This beach town offers visitors excellent restaurants with forever changing prices but also a wide variety of accommodation options in order to meet the demands and budgets of all kinds of travelers.

Zancudo is at its best in February

As one can imagine, the city’s population triples if not quadruple during these months. Lots of surfers from all over the world come here to catch some epic waves while others just enjoy the sun and relax by the beach which gets much less crowded than during the high season.

If you’re not into surfing then there are still plenty of other things to do such as taking jungle tours, fishing, or even scuba diving around nearby coral reefs. They say that March-April is ‘low’ season although we must tell you that this claim does not necessarily reflect what locals and local businesses are feeling.

Prices tend to drop significantly during this time thanks to fewer tourists in general but for some reason or another, Playa Zancudo has never attracted the same number of visitors as other nearby beaches like Playa Avellanas (Guanacaste) or even Pavones (Puntarenas).
